Melbourne is the cultural capital of Australia and is also listed as a Unesco city of literature.
As such, a visit to the Melbourne Athenaeum is an absolute must. Originally founded in 1839 the Melbourne Athenaeum has been the site of a theatre, a cinema, a bookshop and art galleries.
The ground floor of this listed Victorian building is home to various institutions: the Athenaeum Theatre, the Comedy Club, the Ticketmaster, Orsay Bistro and the Opal Gallery.
The Melbourne Athenaeum library on the first floor boasts 60,000 volumes and organises lots of cultural events.
